Embark on a wine pairing journey to the 17th century with Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine estate, exclusively available for one night only at Zafferano. Founded more than 330 years ago behind Table Mountain, the estate has become renowned for the country’s oldest wine, the “Constantia Wyn” – well-loved by European aristocrats, with notable mentions in classic novels by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.
On 30 September 2020, enjoy a remarkable selection of Groot Constantia wines paired with aperitivo and four delectable courses of contemporary Italian fare. Along with a variety of canapés, the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is a crowd-pleaser with inviting, ripe tropical fruit notes. The appetiser of pan-seared ‘Hokkaido’ scallops, ‘porcini’ mushrooms and velvety tarragon emulsion is served with the 2018 Chardonnay. Full-bodied with a rich note of butterscotch on the palate, yet crisp with a fresh acidity.
Bold, rich and intense with oaky and black fruit notes, the 2016 Pinotage complements the super fino ‘acquerello’ risotto, with guinea fowl, and foie gras. Just before the night ends on a sweet note, the third course is a mustard crusted venison loin, with charcoal baked celeriac, and luscious thyme jus. The succulent venison pairs in unison with the 2016 Gouverneurs Reserve that showcases beautiful blackcurrant and blueberry flavours with cinnamon and vanilla on the nose.
The grand finale presents the 2016 Grand Constance. The blend of white and red Muscat de Frontignan lends a beautiful amber hue to the wine. Caramel and dried fruits sit on the palate with a balance of fresh acidity for a well-rounded finish. Complementary to the wine is Japanese strawberry, nougat and Sicilian pistachio.
