Thomas Barker: Indonesia's New Transnational Cinema

Since ‘The Raid’ (2011), Indonesia has become one of the most-watched film industries and the site for a range of new international collaborations and co-productions. In 2017-18 alone, HBO, Netflix, Astro, CJ Entertainment, and Fox International all participated in projects with Indonesia.

This talk discusses the rise of Indonesia’s film industry over the past two decades and the global factors that have led international film business to Indonesia. By looking at the range of projects, the talk traces how Indonesia features in this new form of cinematic trans-nationalisation and the effect it is having on the local industry.

Thomas Barker is an associate professor and head of film and television at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. He researches and writes on Indonesian and Malaysian film and cultural industries, especially their transnational dimensions. You can listen to the 8-part radio series ‘Unpacking Malaysian Cinema Today’ on BFM 89.9FM. His monograph Indonesian Cinema after the ‘New Order: Going Mainstream’ is forthcoming with Hong Kong University Press.
