Thomas Barker: Indonesia's New Transnational Cinema

Since ‘The Raid’ (2011), Indonesia has become one of the most-watched film industries and the site for a range of new international collaborations and co-productions. In 2017-18 alone, HBO, Netflix, Astro, CJ Entertainment, and Fox International all participated in projects with Indonesia.

This talk discusses the rise of Indonesia’s film industry over the past two decades and the global factors that have led international film business to Indonesia. By looking at the range of projects, the talk traces how Indonesia features in this new form of cinematic trans-nationalisation and the effect it is having on the local industry.
