As one of Indonesia’s most prolific directors, Garin Nugroho has spent the past 38 years crafting cinematic excellence that runs the gamut from poetic to romantic to political.
Goethe-Institut Indonesien is delighted to present Setapak Demi Setapak: 38 Tahun Garin Nugroho Berkarya (Step by Step: 38 Years of Garin Nugroho’s Filmmaking), which will screen 2016’s Nyai and 2019’s Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku. These two films are chosen for Goethe-Institut Indonesien’s Arthouse Cinema: Extra program due to their correlation with the current realities of Indonesia.
A dialogue between Garin Nugroho and award-winning scriptwriter Ifan Ismail will follow to discuss the two films as well as reflect on how socio-cultural, political, and economic conditions have informed the former’s filmmaking journey for the past 38 years.
