Checkpoint Theatre: Eat Duck

Checkpoint Theatre (Singapore) is proud to present Eat Duck, a new debut play by Zenda Tan which will be directed by Claire Wong.

In Eat Duck, an extended family holds a seven-day Taoist wake for Grandma. They navigate unfamiliar rites and funeral rituals, offering food and joss paper as the currency of their love. Eat Duck reflects the fading away of traditions, and the struggles many Singaporean families may face in understanding, believing or conducting religious rites and rituals for a loved one’s funeral. The play looks at how we grieve, how we pay our final respects, and how well we are able to heal and to move on.

An ensemble of 11 actors portray the complex but utterly familiar dynamics of this family — Karen Tan, Hang Qian Chou, Jean Ng, Julius Foo, Pavan J Singh, Wiggie, Myle Yan Tay, Victoria Chen, Chaney Chia, Adam Michael Scott Wee An, and Shann Sim – leaving us with an insight the nature of love and loss, helping us all to answer what it truly means to be kin.
