From 9 to 31 August 2022, Baker X welcomes Joo Bakes (@joobakes) to its Orchard Central baking studio and café as the eleventh resident. The home baker will offer a slice of nostalgia with simple and classic butter cakes in delightful local and fruity flavours, as well as chunky, chewy cookies.
Pang Joo Soon (Joo), founder and baker of Joo Bakes, started his home bakery in early 2021. His earliest encounter with baking was as a child when he helped his father bake his homemade Hainanese butter cake. In 2018, he took a break from his corporate job and enrolled in pastry school in Paris and Thailand. During his culinary pursuits, he was introduced to French butter, which has since inspired his baking philosophy of using only quality and fresh ingredients for all his bakes today.
Signatures include old-school classics such as OG Butter Cake ($5 per slice, $33 per loaf), elevated with the use of French Butter to achieve a lighter, fluffy crumb without compromising on the cake’s rich butteriness. Joo also enhances the classic butter cake by infusing different ingredients to create new flavours like Orange ($5.50 per slice, $36 per loaf), Lemon Drizzle ($6 per slice, $38 per loaf), Coffee Walnut ($5.50 per slice, $36 per loaf), and Marble ($5.50 per slice, $36 per loaf). Just in time for National Day, two locally inspired flavours – Pandan* ($6 per slice, $38 per loaf) and Sugee** ($6 per slice, $38 per loaf), are both available in limited quantities. A minimum of 3 days is required for all loaf cake orders via WhatsApp at 82822722. Other swoon-worthy bakes include toothsome and chunky cookies ($6 per cookie, $36 per box of 6). Choose from a variety of flavours like Choc Chip with Walnut Cookie, Matcha with Macadamia Cookie, and Biscoff Cookie.
