In the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, confectionary shops in Japan are lined with a dazzling assortment of chocolate creations, widely regarded as the gift of choice to demonstrate love. The unique custom of giving chocolates on Valentine’s Day began in the 1930s; women were encouraged to give chocolates to men as a way to express their feelings and in return, men reciprocated with gifts a month later on White Day.
On 14 February and 14 March 2022, cherish elaborate gifts of appreciation while indulging in exquisite fine-dining kappo prepared by Chef Eno and her team. Each guest will receive a complimentary box of houjicha nama chocolate sourced directly from Maiko Tea, as well as Ichigo Ichie’s signature uni and durian tenugui. Guests dining in on Valentine’s Day will also relish a dessert specially created by Chef Eno for the occasion, featuring a seasonal highlight of fresh strawberries from Fukuoka.
Crafted by Maiko Tea, the silky smooth houjicha nama chocolate is made with premium houjicha, fresh Japanese cream, and dark chocolate, then finished in a fine coating of the powdered roasted tea. Named houjicha “kaori fumi”, the roasted blend of gyokuro and sencha offers refreshingly light and nutty notes that harmonise with the bittersweet chocolate.
The box of chocolate will be gifted with the restaurant’s signature uni and durian tenugui, a traditional Japanese hand towel that Chef Eno typically presents to guests who are celebrating special occasions. The plum-coloured cloth is adorned with pastel green and cream impressions of the two spiky shelled produce, illustrated by a Singaporean designer friend of Chef Eno.
