Diard & Duvaucel

Rediscovered at the Embassy of France’s initiative and brought to the public’s attention in 2019, the book Diard & Duvaucel published by the Embassy and partners compiles together a precious collection of intricate illustrations made by two intrepid French naturalists, Pierre-Médard Diard and Alfred Duvaucel (and artists working with them), two centuries ago. Today, this magnificent book testifies to the important historical linkages and strong bilateral collaborations shared by
France and Singapore.

Diard and Duvaucel were amongst the earliest naturalists to visit Singapore, to conduct research and publish their observations, thereby playing a key role in the study of biodiversity on the island. Some of the 2,000 items sent back to France have survived and continue to be displayed in the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle in Paris.

Above their great scientific value, this collection of illustrations are of significant aesthetic value – both of which resonate in the present as keen reminders of our responsibility to respect and protect our natural heritage.

The livestreamed book launch will provide an opportunity to address historic and current biodiversity issues during the panel discussion with experts from France and Singapore.
