The Other Side of Hope: A Screening

What will happen when an illegal refugee meets a poker-playing middle age divorced restaurateur? Life is full of unexpected surprises, behold, these two underdogs will create a modern Schindler’s list kind friendship together.

 

Setting out hoping to change perspectives on refugees in Finland, Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki successfully create the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival winning film, The Other Side of Hope. This comedy brings the audience not only an entertainment, but more importantly, a perspective of struggling refugees and their friendship with Finland local residents.

 

During the 98-minute film, illegal refugee Khaled meets Finnish middle age former shirt salesman, Waldemar. The latter got lucky in a poker game and won a big fortune, subsequently quitted the salesman job and opened a restaurant with the fortune.

After finding the illegal refugee Khaled hiding near the restaurant, Waldemar kindly gave poor foreigner a job in the restaurant and put roof over his head. However, happiness never last forever. Khaled’s sister got raped when she tried to be smuggled into Finland, Khaled himself also got stabbed nearly to death by a racist.
