Persona is recognized as one of Bergman’s most important films and a masterful work of art and was voted one of the top 10 films of the year by Cahiers du Cinema.
The story revolves around a well-known stage actress Elisabet who has suddenly stopped speaking and is tended by a nurse named Alma. Elisabet is initially treated in a hospital before moving to a seaside cottage, accompanied by Alma, who confides to Elisabet many intimate details about her life. When Alma discovers that Elisabet has revealed her secrets in a letter, their relationship begins to break down. Bergman’s films often explore themes related to human nature in his work, and in PERSONA, through the story of the friendship and trust to eventual betrayal and animosity between the two main characters, the director explores and queries ideas related to personal identity. Employing many innovative editing techniques, Bergman fuses together images of Elisabet and Alma, blurring the audience’s conception of the two characters and portraying a world of undefined boundaries that mystifies and electrifies the audience at the same time.
