After a thousand years... - A Song Matinée

It was only after a thousand years that numerous poems from China were translated and became known in the West. This surge of Orientalism that flooded the West in the 19th century influenced many of their poets, musicians, and artists. Adopting this as the theme for our recital, we have carefully selected songs that were set to translations of poems from China. Through the art songs of Granville Bantock, Benjamin Britten, John Carpenter, Aaron Copland, Americ Goh, Charles Griffes, Pavel Haas, Constant Lambert, Albert Roussel, Peter Warlock, and Anton Webern, we are able to appreciate the relevance and significance of our Chinese poetry in different languages and cultures. We invite you to join us in this afternoon of art songs.
