Italian Renaissance Lectures

River City Bangkok in collaboration with the European Union in Thailand is pleased to invite you to attend this special lecture by José Riello, Professor in the Department of History and Art Theory of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, on “The parallelism of El Greco with Italian Renaissance artists”.

Lecture topic for 4th October : Florence, circa 1504. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and the Rise of the Renaissance Art in Europe.

1504 was a great year in Florence. The two greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance were working side by side in the same room, the Hall of the Great Council of the city. Leonardo had just finished The Last Supper in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milano, and he had begun the most famous portrait of the history of the European painting: the Mona Lisa. Meanwhile, Michelangelo was finishing the huge statue of David, the archetype sculpture of the Early Modern Period. Near, a young artist from Urbino recently arrived in the city did not miss a detail of the artistic battle between the two giants; his name was Raphael. In those days, the history of European art changed forever.
